SAAB J 35H Draken

The Draken lost out to Mirage III in the competition for a new interceptor for Switzerland but I decide to build a Swiss Draken anyway.
(Model finished 2015)

I was going to do a quick out of the box build.... But I couldn't resist to use the saw a bit. It almost looks like something Batman could have used.

This is a very early boxing of the Airfix kit as it has the wrong type of canopy. Initially it had the early type of canopy that was used on the A, B, D and early E versions. The J 35F that the kit depicts got a new canopy that didn't have so much framing and were a bit more bulbous. Airfix reworked the canopy after getting critics about it being wrong but they didn't change the shape, so the new canopy is little bit to flat. The funny thing is that the kit has two gun-ports like on the early versions while the F-version only had one, so the easiest fix would have been removing the IR-sensor under the nose instead of reworking the canopy. The kit would then have been a J 35D. The kit would then have been a J 35D. But I am doing a bit of a WHIF so I have reworked the top of the fin for an early type.

Well my quick build didn't turn out to be too fast after all, it took 11 months. But finally, I got it ready for paint.

This is one of my favourite planes and that makes it hard to build it. I want the details to be right.

I tried the white aluminium in the new Vallejo metallic range and was positively surprised. I never had any luck with the Vallejo paints, but this went on like a dream. I must try it some more before I am certain that I've found my new SAAB paint. SAAB aircraft are rather grey compared to other bare metal planes.

A J 35H as it might have looked in the Swiss AF if it hadn't lost to the Mirage III. I looked at pics of the 35H prototype when building it and it wasn't much that needed to be fixed.
It had the old type of canopy in the box so all I had to do was to backdate the fin and remove the IR-pod under the nose.

Sadly, the Mirage decals from Esci and the F-5E decals from Revell didn't work to well because of their age so I had to brush paint parts of the markings.
