SAAB 37-1 spin tests

The first Viggen prototype after modifications.
(Model finished 2015)

This one is one I didn't plan to build. It is late version of the 37-1. Only if I would find a Matchbox AJ 37 cheap I might consider building it. Well I did find one cheap so here we go.

This time I'm trying to fill the horrible panel line trenches. I fill them with Tamiya putty and then run the rivet tool along the sanded panel lines.

Ready to be cleaned before painting.

I used the same kind of pitot tube as on the other 37-1 but mounted it differently so it became shorter.

It was almost built out of the box. I just added the central air intake under the fuselage from a Heller kit.

Close call. I was going to take a picture of the Heller air intake before painting

and was looking at pictures so that I would know which small tabs for the missiles I should remove on the pylons when I to my horror noticed that the tail cone had to be modified.

The horror soon turned in to joy. I had to bring out the saw and the model would be a bit different. For once I noticed it in time.
One of the reasons I didn't want to build the late 37-1 was that it would be more or less the same as the 37-7 that I will build later but now it will have a different tail.

Santa Claus hat or is it Rudolph the red nosed reindeer? Well never mind, Christmas is over.

Next step is black paint.

The Matchbox Viggen is more colourful then the rest of the prototypes that I've built.

First, I tried the Citadel silver paint, but I couldn't get the their new paint formula to work in the airbrush. Then I tried Plata Liquido from Vallejo. It laid down very thin and nice but didn't cover so another layer was needed. Then it freaked out. It almost looked like small cotton balls mixed with the paint. I tried it a couple of times with the same result so that paint is scrapped.

Finally, I tried a bottle of JPS color. It was too thick for the 0,20 nozzle but when I thinned the paint it worked for a while. But suddenly it seemed like the paint separated from the water, so I got lots of stains in the paint job. The models look like crap. Next time I will probably try Alclad.

The same paper cockpits were used again.

The late version of the 37-1 after it was rebuilt with the high spine and saw tooth wings.

During spin tests it became a bit colourful.

Red underneath.

At one point the 37-1 and 37-2 swapped fins so the number two was visible under the black number one. I don't know if the spin test logo on the fin was there at the same time as the black and red fields, but I wanted to have it on my model.

A camera was mounted above the wing during the spin tests.
