SAAB 37-4

The Fourth Viggen prototype. The 37-4.
(Model finished 2017)

I'm using the Frog/Hasegawa kit for this build.

Despite the two different boxes the plastic is the same. I started by vandalising the wings.

The 37-4 is getting the saw tooth in the wings

but the radar warning pods stays under the wings.

The jet exhaust looks a bit simple in these kits from Frog/Hasegawa

while Airfix has optional parts.

The reversing plates from Airfix fits in the Frog kit without modification.

I discovered that one canopy was missing so I tried to make a vac-canopy. The fifth or sixth try gave me something that I might use so I went on with the kits.
First some paper in the cockpit. Paper panels and paper belts.

I also had to build the pylons under the fuselage. With w 37-4 standing on its legs it is ready for paint. Just a final swipe with sandpaper and then...

I built me a second 37-4. The first one I repainted to the 37-5.

-4 had a short life. First flight in May 28, 1968. It crashed in May 7, 1969. The forward part of the fuselage could be saved and was used to build a new prototype, -7. (It did crash 1975. Both pilots survived.)
