An Austrian J 29F Tunnan

For a long time, I've been searching for information of the Austrian camera nose on their J29's as I would like to build one of the planes with it. Now I got some pictures from an old Tunnan pilot, so I've started on it.
Austria used the F-model that had an afterburner, but the 1/72 Heller kit is of an earlier version, so it will be wrong. The Matchbox kit is of the right type, but the kit isn't very good, so I have to combine the two. It says Airfix on the box but inside is the old Heller kit.
(Model finished 2011)

I used the engine panel from the Matchbox kit and the rest will be the Heller kit. The jet exhaust is from an old pen, it had the right diameter and can be glued with plastic glue.

I think that I got the shape of the new camera nose done now I can start building the model.

I don't think that I ever used any aftermarket cockpit details, but some time must be the first. I am using the etch set with pre-painted instrument panel from Maestro hobby.

Not much of it will be seen but I remembered that I had a chair from Pavla but it was too wide to fit in the cockpit tub, so I had to trim it.

I also tried to add some texture to the tires

The method is something that I think was a tip from Hyperscale forums. I laid a blade from the Olfa scriber on a piece of 0,75mm plastic card and scribed the first line. Then i turned the wheel upside down a scribed it again. Then I did the same thing again but with 2mm of plastic for the two lines in the middle.

I took the small air scoops from the remains of the Matchbox fuselage.

I finished it using the Austrian decals from IPMS Austria's resin kit.

But since I want at least two Swedish Tunnan with afterburner I have to do the tail conversion again.

The good thing is that I don't have to make the camera nose on those.

SAAB J 29F Tunnan Target Tug

When the "fighting years" were over the Tunnan's became "Target Tugs"
(Model finished 2016)

As I mentioned with the Austrian Tunnan the F-model had an afterburner, so it was "fatter". To build this one I once again added the Matchbox engine fairing to the Heller kit but as it is hard to cut the parts exactly I got large gaps that needed to be filled between the parts. I used plastic strips for this.

I decided to use the Matchbox cockpit as it is more accurate than the Heller cockpit. I didn't like the seat, so I removed it and added the Heller seat instead. I made a new rear wall of plastic card.

I wanted clear navigation lights at the wing tips. I drilled small holes in thick clear plastic and filled them with red and green paint to simulate the light bulbs.

I glued them to the wing and filed them to the right shape. Nail files did a good work polishing them.

I used the etch set from Maestro but needed to adapt it somewhat to fit the Matchbox parts used in the cockpit. An MBV-2S target winch from Maestro Models is mounted on a modified pylon from an Airfix Draken. I used an old pen for the jet exhaust.

The counterweight is a Matchbox Tunnan drop-tank that got some fins. The pylon comes from the same Draken kit as the other one.

There was a beacon light on the back that I had to scratch build. I have painted the Tunnan but I'm not happy with the result. It became "pebbly". Strangely enough it looks better in pictures than real life.

Well, whatever. Next is a wing target for my Tunnan.

The Vingmål VM 4 (wing target VM 4) is almost ready to paint, just a few small details left to add.

I finished the VM 4 target just to learn that wasn't used with the target winch under the wing. The planes also had an attachment point under the belly.

Looking at pictures I thought that it was placed under the cockpit but that turned out to be a second beacon light. Then I found something under the rear that might be it. Whatever it was I have now added both items under the plane.

This was my third target tug but there are more to come.

I added different shades to some panels which made it look better.
