Landsverk L-60

I was glad and surprised when IBG released the Landsverk L-60 family, even if it was licence built in Hungary as Toldi.
(Models finished 2022)

Some parts are very fine and thin. The tracks were hard to remove from the sprues because of this. To ease the assembly of the wheels I used two pieces of cardboard between the wheels to get them mounted straight.
I only used the Swedish flags from the IBG decals. The white numbers for the turrets were not opaque enough and the small yellow numbers was too brownish for my taste. Instead I used aftermarket decals.

Strv m/38 (Landsverk L-60 S/I)

Landsverk's tank L-60 was a development of the L-10, a tank m/31 that Sweden ordered for trials and had been delivered in 1935.
The L-60 tank was considerably lighter - 8.7 tonnes instead of 11.5 tonnes - even though the thickness of the armour steel was largely the same and the armament on both were a 37 mm cannon.
Two L-60 had been exported to Ireland. Austria and Hungary had bought one. In Hungary, the L-60 tank came to be licensed under the name "Toldi".
Sweden ordered 15 tanks armed with a 37 mm gun and one single 8 mm machinegun.

I started on this and started to paint it together with my Strv m/37 and choose a green that was to dark so I had to repaint it.

At this time I noticed that I forgot the etch parts but it wasn't a big problem as I had to repaint it anyway.

Black. and brown followed

Strv m/39 (Landsverk L-60 S/II)

There were negotiations with Landsverk on further deliveries of Strv m/38. One wish was that the new tanks should consist of a more powerful armour. However, this was opposed by Landsverk, who explained that the construction would not withstand the higher weight. Therefore, it was only with small modifications that contracts were signed on a slightly improved tank called L-60-S/II. There were details that differed - but mostly it was the same as the Strv m/38. The turret was slightly changed with the cannon in a separate gun shield on the left and the machinegun moved to the right supplemented with a second. A cooler for the gearbox had been added on the front armour. Deliveries was delayed and at this time, the war had made it clear that stronger armour was necessary, so a decision was made that the vehicles could be provided with an extra frontal protection that increased the armour thickness from 15 to 50 mm. However, these additional protections would only be used in combat operations and not be mounted during exercise to keep the wear the tank down.

This time I went for the lighter green directly. No need to paint it twice.

It is enough that I had to add two more colours.

Strv m/40L (Landsverk L-60 S/III)

When a contract was signed with Landsverk for 20 tanks m/39, the problem remained that the second tank battalion still needed tanks. When Germany seized the order for the Czech tanks that was ordered, Landsverk was contacted again. The requirement for increased armour protection was now even more urgent so Landsverk therefore further developed its concept into a version they came to call L-60-S III. Like the m/39, the tank could have a 35 mm thick supplementary protection, a difference was that some of these additional plates were welded from the beginning. Otherwise, both armament and engine were of the same type as on Strv m/39 - however with a different design of air intakes over the engine.

One plus with building several of similar tanks is that the same colours are used so one can paint them at the same time.

The same brown and black was used again.

Strv m/40K (Landsverk L-60 S/V)

An additional order was sent to Landsverk in June 1942 for additional m/40 tanks. Due to lack of production capacity at Landsverk, the assignment went on to Karlstads Mekaniska Verkstad to build these tanks under license. These tanks were a further development of the basic concept L-60 and they were named L-60-S/V by Landsverk. The army named the new tanks Strv m/40K with the K for Karlstad. The previous delivered tanks were renamed m/40L with the L for Landsverk.

Compared to the previous version, some improvements had been incorporated. The armour cover had been strengthened so that it now included the previous supplementary protection in the basic structure. This was made possible thanks to a more powerful motor (162 hp instead of 142 hp) and a reinforced suspension. As a result, the front armoru was slightly different in design. A visible difference is also the location of the two machineguns to the right of the cannon - on Strv m/40L they are slightly separated in height (just like on Strv m/39) but they are at the same height in the horizontal plane on the Strv m/40K.
