SAAB 37

The Swedish word vigg is usually translated into thunderbolt in English. So viggen = the thunderbolt.
The Norse god Thor had a hammer that threw thunderbolts which leads us to the logo on the SAAB Viggen prototype.
Keep this in the back of your head. I will return to its name later.
(Model finished in the mid 1970's and converted 2018)

I built the Airfix 1/72 kit as a kid somewhere in the mid 1970's and it has been standing on the shelf since then.

Finally, I've built a new one to replace it, but I decided to take some pictures of the old one before it was replaced.

The original plane has been sent to the scrap yard and been cut up and the same fate waited for my model.
It is funny that I had made a paper cockpit in this one to.

I planned to use some parts for a Hasegawa Viggen and perhaps use a couple of other parts for something.
I started experimenting with the use of Heller intakes on the Airfix kit, but they need to be higher to fit.

With some work they fit. I decided to use the front part of the fuselage for something, so I added a central air intake from a Heller kit under the fuselage.

Perhaps a plane coming out of the clouds would look nice on the wall?

I started with a pale shade of green.

Then it got the grey camouflage.

Then I tried some heavy chipping of the grey.

Now the old kit has ended up as a "rescue Viggen" old planes used to train how to get wounded pilots out of the cockpit. I have seen pictures of at least three different planes. I know that the F17 wing didn't have a grey one, but I didn't find the right decals for the F16 wing.

Well I mentioned the thunderbolt earlier. Vigg is also the Swedish word for the bird Tufted Duck. The plane was not named after the bird, but my old plane has emerged again just like the bird Fenix and has now retaken its place on the model shelf.
