Scandinavian Airlines Junkers Ju52

It was a long time since I built a Junkers so it was time to rectify this. I was given this model that had been slightly started. Wing halves had been assembled.
(Model finished 2023)

Also the filling with windows for the cargo door had been glued. Every planned Ju 52/3m that I have are for a prewar plane where the cargo door has to be replaced and new corrugation has to be built.
Now I needed to find a postwar plane with the cargo door and I found one.

It is nice to be able to build a civilian Ju52 without the need to remove the big cargo hatch and replace the corrugations but I had to build a door at the front. For this I used part of the unused cargo door.

The Italeri kit has some spots that are missing corrugation. So I made a quick "dirty fix". As this plane isn't one that was on my build list I wasn't going to put to much work into it.

I added floats that I had in the spare part boxes. I think that it should have Junkers floats and not the Heinkel type from the kit but as far as I know there are no Junkers floats in 1/72.

It is now ready to enter the paint box.

It didn't end up the quick build I had hoped for but I should have known that it would die when it was time for paint.

Two years later I made masks for the black so there is a small hope for it.

I also made masks for the letters on the wings.

Then I started on the decals. That will be a mix of sources. Italeri once had SAS decals in a kit but they were the lighter blue from the 1970's, not useful for the Ju52.
When I had a working Alps printer I made the red-blue-white stripe that now came in handy.

I wasn't all pleased with them. I should have bought a 1/144 DC-6 sheet from LN-decals to replace the letters above the windows. The one I used are from the Minicraft DC-6. The size is OK but the colour is to dark, almost black, and they broke some on the other side. But wasn't sure that I wanted to invest in them just for two decals since I left the 1/144 scale as there would beany use for the rest.

I decided to remove the decals with the fuselage registration and paint them instead. Then some repairs to the aileron mounts was needed. In the end I decided to get the LN-decal sheet.

Repairs on the way. I have earlier tried to add a small L-shaped piece of plastic to the break but I felt that the small attachment point would be to weak so I had to come up with an alternative plan. Instead I sawed off the broken part and added new parts in to the slot. These were sawed off an old Airfix wing. I need to reshape them after the glue have set and perhaps I need a little putty but at least I have a larger attachment between the wing and the new parts.

This is my fifth Ju52 finished (in the true scale. I managed to build one in 1/48 but that scale doesn't count)

I wasn't going to build a SAS Junkers as it wasn't a Swedish one but this kit gave me the motivation to do it. I think that this is one of the best looking liveries for the Ju52.

This plane had a rather interesting life. It was produced in 1936 given the registration D-AQUI Fritz Simon and later sold to DNL in Norway registered as LN-DAH Falken.
When Norway was invaded in 1940 it was confiscated by the German Army. After the war it was returned it to DNL and was rebuilt with a fuselage from a military plane.
This is why it has the large cargo door with window in the right side of the fuselage. It was then re-registered as LN-KAF Askeladden and flew for SAS until 1956.
It was sold to Ecuador and later ended up in USA under the name Iron Annie where it was used in air shows. The plane was finally bought by Lufthasa registered D-CDLH but with the old registaration D-AQUI painted on the wings. Now it was named Tempelhof. I saw it once when it visited Stockholm and I regret that I didn't take a flight with it as it is now grounded.
