WHIF Sweden

The promotion of the show

A F-86 and MiG15?
Well maybe not. It is SAAB Tunnan. But why? There is a perfectly good explanation to this craziness.

I needed a new landing gear for the J 29D prototype I built earlier. The gear in the Matchbox kit is very thin so I wanted to replace it with the one from the Airfix/Heller kit. So, I brought out an old wreck and robbed it of the landing gear.
OK that wasn't a good explanation, so I make another try.
(Models finished 2012-2013)

There was a model competition in Gothenburg and our local club in Stockholm was there with a table to promote our competition. We have one special themed class in our show and that year it had been literature and movies. The following year it would be Swedish WHIF. Anything Swedish in foreign markings or the other way around. What If's was included, so for a visual promotion why not remove the Swedish markings on the legless Tunnan and use some old Soviet decals on it instead of throwing it in the bin?

While I was on it, I remarked an equally old Matchbox kit as a Korean war machine.

Later I would put Swedish markings on a Fokker Triplane as well.
I read that there was rumours of Swedish Thulin engines was sold to Germany during WW1 and that they were used in the Fokker Triplane.
Well it wasn't true but what if? In my scenario this was true and Thulin in return got a licence to build the Triplane as the Thulin TR.
Three old kits badly built and painted got a new life. Still badly built and painted but they served a purpose. But for our show I built a F-86 and a MiG15 in Swedish colours.

The entry for the show

For the show I put together a story and made a map as a base for the planes.

At the top I put a piece of The socialist newspaper Norrskensflamman that say:
Sweden will be reunited
Our eastern half of the country is brought back.
After almost 140 years of separation, we will be reunited.
Finland and Sweden will once again be one nation.

At the bottom I had a text explaining it all:

The Ribbentrop-Molotov pact didn't only tell how Poland would be divided but also the future of the Nordic states. Germany would get Norway, Sweden and Denmark while Soviet would get Finland. On Septmber 1, Poland was attacked by Germany and later that month the Soviets eneterd the eastern part of Poland as planned. In November the same year Finland was attacked, but now things didn't go according to plans. Finland defended itself and managed to avoid occupation. Germany fared better. In April 1940 they attacke an soon Norway,Sweden and Denmark were under German control. The Soviets made several attempts to occupy Finland during the following years without success. Only in 1944 did they have the stregth to break into Finland. The force of the attack was great and they continued into Sweden and Norway from the north. German-Swedish-Norwegian troops finally managed to stop the advance at Umeälven, where the front remained until the end of the war.
After the peace the Soviets refused to leave the annexed areas and remained. United States and Great Britain viewed this with great concern and brought troops into the south to prevent a Soviet attack. On June 6, 1947 the Socialist Republic of Sweden was formed in the northen parts of Norway and Sweden. United States and Great Britain thought that the mutilated countries south of the river would not be able to withstand an attack from the north. Therefore the rest of Sweden was united with Norway. Stalin was very annoyed that Finland managed to resist the Attack for so long and in 1948, under great propaganda, Finland that the Russian Tsar had stolen was returned to Sweden. Apparently he had forgotten that Finland already liberated itself from Russia almost thirty years earlier.

For the Kingdom of Norway I chose a F-86 from Hobbycraft

I made a mix of the prewar Norwegian and Swedish marking combining them to fit with the allied roundel type.

A MiG15 was my choise for the Swedish Air Force.

This is an old kit from KP

Here I used the Swedish markings as a base swapping the three crowns with stars.
