Tyrrell P34, Belgium GP 1977

Tamiya updated their original 1976 version of the Tyrrell P34 in 1/20 scale to a 1977 version. At first glance they look the same, so they could have taken the easy road and just add new decals and most people would not have known but thankfully they added a couple of new sprues with parts for the 1977 car instead.
(Models finished 2014)

Tyrrell raced in this configuration in three races and I have seen pictures from a couple more were it was brought along as a spare car.
I decided to build mine from the Belgian GP using decals from Indycals.

Tamiya missed one thing though. In 1977 Tyrrell used a different type of tachometer so I decided to build them.
I printed out the instruments and is building some frames to mount them on.

Another thing is the exhaust pipes that should be bent outward. A bit of cut and rearrange was needed.
I add more details for each build. This time it was brake lines.

With the engine so visible I feel the need to add cables and tubes to it.

It was rain that race weekend so some "weather proofing" was apparently done with gaffa tape. I tried to replicate this with black decals.

I like to add the drivers helmets if I can and bought a set of resin helmets. Sadly, the decals in the kit didn't fit so I had to cut them and try to make them fit.

The reason for me to choose this race was that Ronnie's and Patrick's cars didn't look exactly the same. Different rear mirrors and some decals were in different places. I also decided to put rain tyres on Ronnie's car to make them differ even more.

These builds were unusual trouble free, the biggest problems were probably the helmets. While looking at pictures of the cars to get the details right I realized that there were some good pictures from the pit so I decided to build a back drop for photographing models using the pit lane in Zolder as pattern.
