Williams FW07

Tamiya 1/20 scale. It was meant to be a straight out of the box build but the decals are old and starting to be yellow so new decals from Indycals was ordered.
(Model finished 2013)

But I didn't like the massive plastic grid in front of the radiators. In fact, when I looked at the instructions I thought that they were a set of radiators as well. I will try to replace them with a net or similar but it means that the bottom of the radiators might be little visible but they are blank on the kit.

My first thought was just to inscribe a pattern but then I decided to experiment a little. A mould was made of the radiator.

The mould was filled with Tamiya putty

and the radiator was pressed in to the wet putty.

A little soft in the details perhaps but they will be inside the side pods with a limited view to them.

I had plans of a straight out of the box build including the driver As I was going to fix the moulded net I decided to make a few more changes.

I built some boxes in the cockpit and added a tube to the steering.

I also added a piece to the middle of a bulkhead.

The driver is the standard Tamiya issue that didn't fit to well, so I decided to skip it and made some simple pedals in the cockpit instead.

I think they will be visible enough to justify the extra work.

One new net in place. As I suspected the work on the bottom of the radiators was unnecessary. It isn't visible, but I like this net better.

I wasn't going to add any cables or fuel lines as they will be invisible when the body has been glued in place. But I had bought some thread I was hoping to use as fuel lines on a later build, so I thought that it was better to test it here where it doesn't matter if things go wrong. But as it turned out everything went fine. At least I have the picture to remind me when this car is finished.

Time to close it up and add decals.

As I said earlier I will be using decals from Indycals. But it looks very clean this way.

Michaels decals are great. Look good, are thin and works very well. Looking at pictures I noticed that I choose the wrong driver for this kit. It is Alan Jones car that was moulded.
When I looked at pictures of Regga's car from the British GP I reacted on the roll bar being to high in the kit. But then I saw that on Alan's car it was higher just as in the kit. So now is the question: Cut down the roll bar or just leave it? Right now, it irritates me and as I build curb side the cut will never be visible so I don't have to make the cut looking good. Well I think I know the answer to the question already.

Roll bar has been cut down. Time to get back to the decals.

I have added seatbelts. I bought the seat belt set from Tamiya but wasn't happy with the paper belts, so I bought a roll of blue satin ribbon.

It was 3 mm wide but that was little to wide so I put on a thin layer of white glue on the backside of the ribbon, so it wouldn't tear when cutting it. I think it look much better than the paper belts.

The Williams FW07 is ready. So here are some pics of it.

The reason for me to build it is that it reminds me of a Lotus 79.

How can an almost out of the box build generate so many pictures?
