Tyrrell 008. Patrick Depailler, Swedish GP 1978

After having finished my first large multimedia kit, a Tyrrell 009 I went straight on to another. Once again, a Studio 27 kit in 1/20 scale.
(Model finished 2014)

It seems like I did a bad job cleaning the resin body. The masking tape lifted the paint. Now the paint is removed, I sanded it, washed it with soap and then with acetone. Let’s hope for the best. One thing for sure is that MM kits not are addictive. I don't enjoy the build. If these kits have been available in plastic I would have bought them instead. But I really wanted these cars so there wasn't much choice. My biggest gripe is that there is no sensible glue to use on them. A styrene carver that is what I am and that is what I'll stay. Yes, I am grumpy. I've had a fight with ill-fitting exhaust pipes. The rest of the paint was easy to remove so I've started all over an have now the white back on.

I'm not happy with the front wheels. They are too large. I found a set of rims from MFH that has a smaller diameter and equally important they are narrower than the ones in the kit. The really good thing is that the centre inserts from the Tyrrell wheels fit perfectly in the MFH rims. I might even have a fix for the tyres. I was looking at some Nascar wheels in 1/25 and found them equal in size to the Hasegawa Lotus 79 front tyres. To the left is a Tamiya Lotus 79 tyre on the Large Tyrrell 008 rim. To the right the Nascar tyre on the smaller MFH rim. Not perfect but a solution until I can find rain tyres for my Lotus 79, so I can free the slicks from it.

Sometimes I wonder if modelling is therapy or if therapy is needed after modelling. I almost feel that a course in anger management might be a good investment building Studio 27 kits. After much frustration and brute force, I managed to get the rear suspension together. Time to bring out the masking tape and mask the body for some blue paint.

As I decided on the MFH front wheels I could see that they are more detailed than the S27 rear wheels. The MFH wheels have four bolts so while the paint on the body was drying I decided to add the bolts from the MFH rear wheels to the S27 wheels. Four 0,55 mm holes were drilled, and the bolts were added.

Hooray! I managed to remove the masking tape leaving the paint on the car.

I finally decided to use slicks from MFH so now it is up on its feet. The glue is curing on the rear wing right now. As I'm doing a Swedish GP car it has the early front wings and the late type of radiators on the side pods.

Working on the decals. Can almost see the finish line now. Hope there is fuel enough. I have to make new side skirts for the Tyrrell. I don't know if they are wrong or if they changed model later in the season, but I can't use the ones in the kit.
I think that I give up. I saw a pic from the German GP and noticed something about the engine cover. It looks like it is a two piece. Looking closely to the pic from the Swedish GP and it seems like that this is when this appeared for the first time. So now my car is wrong. I don't know if I care anymore as Studio 27 messed up with the decals. The red circle with the white E inside has an arrow pointing upward. This decal is to large, so the red arrow ends up in the red rectangle it is supposed to point to. The "First National City" text on the sides has the letters placed too close to each other and the words to close together so that the decals are at least 6 mm to short. So, I'm not sure if I care to make new side skirts when so much is wrong any way. I know one thing. I won't buy any more S27 kits.
But I am so disappointed with myself right now for missing the engine cover. I should have noticed it and built an earlier version. I can tolerate (barley) the bad fitting parts but I think that it is sloppy work by S27 missing the decals. At one point they must have tested them and noticed that they don't fit. I noticed the problem when I was placing the decal on the car, so it was too late to separate all the letters. All that I could do was to separate the words a little. Not perfect but with my miss of the engine cover I don't care.

The letters F and I should be behind the roll bar and the word CITY in front of the mirrors. But they could be placed too far forward? Last night before going to bed I was ready to fix it. Remove the decal, Fill the holes for the mirrors and extinguisher and put them in the right places and repaint the white so I made a test with tape to see if the decals or the paint would come off. neither did. Good quality of the decals and gloss white paint made them stick. So, I binned the thought and went to sleep. Today I finished the rest of the decals and now only have the seat belts and mirrors left to do. So, while not entirely happy, it is a great looking car and the model looks good after all so it will join the others on the shelf and I'll move on to the next kit.

I was looking at the car in the Swedish GP and was wondering why they put louvres on the side skirt but when I looked at the German GP picture I mentioned earlier I realized it is rubber that is bulging. So, I started on the skirts trying to replicate this. I have to add the rivets, but I think it might work.

The final parts in place.

The skirts got painted.

Tamiya belt set with blue satin ribbon and mirrors from a Tamiya Lotus 79.

The final detail to show it's from the Swedish GP. The Anderstorp Racing Club sticker.
