Tyrrell 009

JP Jarier, Brazil GP 1979

I remember when the Tyrrell 009 was presented that the papers said that it was a copy of the Lotus 79. When finally, the Lotus was release as a kit I also wanted a Tyrell. My plan was to convert the Hasegawa Lotus, so I bought Tyrrell decals from Studio 27 for the build.
(Model finished 2013)

As things turned out I bought the resin kit of the Tyrrell instead and converted the Hasegawa Lotus to the prototype Lotus 79/1. I didn't like the Candy sponsored car to much, so I bought the early season version with the Tyrrell logos on the sides. I would have preferred the version from Argentine and Brazil GP's, before they started to add stuff to the body that made the car uglier, but I decided to build it straight out of the box to practice on how to build multimedia kits. But then I noticed the boxing above the radiators looked to be almost twice the height of the real ones, so I decided to fix this.

Now that I had to do some conversion on the kit I decided to backdate it to the early races. I rebuilt the ugly rear of the side pods. I also sanded down the top of the front part of the side pod to get a slope that look more like pictures of the real car. Well it is obvious that I have large problems building something out of the box. I always manage to find a version that can't be built from the kits.

I was dry fitting the front wing and noticed that it didn't come out straight. I tried to find out where to file to get it right when I saw that the entire nose was bent to the right. I don't think it is possible to fix but I will cut the nose of and try to decrease the bend, so the wing looks straight. It looks worse in real life than on picture. Well I never liked resin or enjoy working with multimedia kits and this doesn't help. Give up and give in? No way.

I started the nose job by make a cut on the left side as far back as possible. As it turned out this was all that was needed. When I glued it together again the nose wing was straight. I am glad that I didn't have to remove it completely. The cockpit is a little bare, so I added the driver that I couldn't get to fit in the Williams here instead.

The main parts are glued together with front suspension dry fitted. It is different than building a plastic kit, but things are going better than I had expected. Lots of drilling to get the screws in or the small location pegs to fit.

Work has been done on the rear of the side pods.
I took a couple of tries but now I feel I am a large step closer to finish it.

I made them from 0,12 mm brass. Looking at pictures of the Tyrrell I think that they should be present on later versions of the car as well.

So here is a template for them.

I will have the wrong type of front wing end plates. The ones in the kit seems to have been used by Jarier in South Africa, USA and Spain only. So, I made new ones of brass.

I started to modify the helmet.

There is a hatch behind the left radiators that is missing on the kit. Of course, I forgot to make it before painting, so I had to scribe one afterwards. I could have played it safe and just let it be, but I knew that it would bother me later, so I took a chance. In the end the I didn't ruin the paint.

I built an exhaust protection.
One thing that had me worried turned out not being a large problem after all: Getting all four wheels to touch the ground.

But the driver got his head and the decals are in place.
It was a good thing that I originally planned to convert a Lotus 79 into this car, so I had bought the Studio 27 decals. Now I needed smaller tyre decals for the front wings and they were on that sheet.

So, I finished my first multimedia kit. It didn't turn out in a complete disaster but as usual I had to build a version not available.

The experience didn't scare me off multi media-models. In fact, I will start on another soon.
